Can a midwife become a gynecologist

Image
You would need to apply to medical school then to an Ob-gyn residency. I have met a few nurses that have done just that, RN to MD but not from CNM to MD. But if you want to do surgery then that is the way to go. The midwives that were in my practice did a lot of office gyn (Well Woman Care) but had no interest in surgery. If you are already a midwife why would you want to spend 8 more years relearning many of the things you already know?

Stress and disrupted circadian rhythm affect metabolism

Image
The researchers studied mice models in the laboratory wherein they introduced genetic alterations in various parts of the circadian rhythm machinery. They also exposed the mice to social stress, wherein they exposed the male mice to an unknown and dominant male. The male mice had increased stress responses depending on the time they were exposed to the stress. In a series of experiments, the team also found that the stress responses were also dependent on the internal body clock, and body weight and food intake had been negatively affected when stress happens during their inactive phase, which is during the daytime in mouse, and night-time in humans. Therefore, they found that repeated exposure to stress negatively affected metabolism, due to long-lasting effects on stress responses. The experiments shed light on who shift-work, chronic stress, jet lag, and lack of good sleep can lead to metabolic disorders. Today, many people are faced with metabolic diseases, including obesity. Many ...

Certain professions and late dinners bad for women’s heart health

Image
A new study from a team from Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has revealed that post-menopausal women in certain professions are more likely to suffer from heart diseases and other heart problems. Many of these jobs include those in health care, says the study. The results of the study are to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2019 to be held in Philadelphia between November 16th and 18th. For this study and to draw conclusions, the team had to investigate the heart health of a large number of women. They included over 65,000 postmenopausal women for their analysis and the average age of the study population was 63 years. These women and their data were part of the Women’s Health Initiative study. In the database, the team noted 20 common professions of the women and classified them according to the “ Life’s Simple 7 cardiovascular health metrics ” prescribed by the American Heart Association. Includ...

Nurse launches podcast to dispel fears about psychiatric hospitals

Image
A newly qualified mental health nurse has given patients detained in psychiatric hospitals a platform to share their experiences in a bid to challenge fears and misunderstandings amongst the public. Mr. Waldron told, he felt it was important to ensure the voice of patients was heard because there were still misconceptions that meant the public were “scared of people who are in hospital”. He said he wanted to educate the general public that mental health hospitals did not consist of “straight-jackets” and “white coats” like some people still believed. “Patients have got fantastic stories and a fantastic life history,” said Mr. Waldron, who qualified in March this year and is employed by St Andrew's Healthcare. “And so, I thought this was a way to give them a voice through podcasts.” Mr. Waldron first came up with the idea during his studies and decided to pitch it to his employer. He had worked for St Andrew's Healthcare as a healthcare assistant for more than 10 years before...

Chip Device Heals Injuries In Seconds

Image
Picture this - you suffer a car accident and your leg is broken. Within moments a small chip-like silicone device is placed on the broken leg - it reprograms the skin cells beneath and treats the injury - in a matter of seconds.  Sounds like the stuff of science fiction, right? Nope. This is real-life, folks! A new non-invasive technology - Tissue Nanotransfection (TNT) - has been developed by researchers at Ohio State University to reprogram and grow skin cells directly on the body. The device delivers genes to skin cells by passing a strong electrical current through the chip and transforming the cells.  In lab studies on mice, the tiny device has successfully reprogrammed and grown cells - healing injured parts of the body - from broken bones to brain damage.  This is the first time cells have been reprogrammed on a live body.  The torn arteries in a mouse’s broken leg were healed after touching TNT - it turned the skin cells into vascular cells - healing t...

What is Radial Artery?

Image
All arteries have a pulse, but it's easier to palpate (feel) the pulse or heartbeat at certain locations. it's easier to feel the pulse or heart beat when the artery is near the surface of the skin and when there's firm tissue (such as a bone) beneath the artery. The three commonest sites are the radial (wrist), carotid (throat), and brachial The area that you choose to check the pulse may vary depending upon the condition of the patient. The most commonly used is Radial pulse (wrist area). The radial pulse (the pulse is taken using radial artery) is taken at a point where the radial artery crosses the bones of the wrist. When the patient’s hand is turned so that the palm is facing up, the radial pulse is taken on the thumb side of the top side of the wrist. Q. Which artery is usually palpated to get the pulse? Brachial Radial Axillary Ulnar

What are the key reasons behind the fall in childhood immunisation rates?

Image
The blame has been often pushed onto so-called anti-vaxxers and anti-vaccination messages, but those among the profession and beyond believe bigger problems lie with workforce challenges and the healthcare system itself. Helen Bedford, professor of children’s health and a nurse by background, said a key factor in falling rates was the reduction in health visitor numbers. Figures from the Institute of Health Visiting show a 31.8% reduction of health visitors since they were transferred to local authorities from the NHS in 2015. Due to staff shortages, health visitors are being forced to focus more on “at-risk” families, as opposed to promoting health guidance , said professor Bedford, who works at the University College London Institute of Child’s Health. She said this meant issues such as immunization became “less of a priority”. Another problem cited was the accessibility of services. The government has previously suggested that more services should be provided on weekends or ...

What is a certified nurse-midwife?

Image
A nurse-midwife becomes an RN first and then goes to school to be a midwife for another 2 yrs. So she has a master's degree in midwifery. She is a CNM and can prescribe medications and do hospital births. Rarely does a CNM do home births? A direct-entry midwife goes straight into midwifery school for 2 yrs, pass a national exam, and does about 3–5 yrs of an internship. She is a Certified professional midwife, usually with a state license. “ CPM”. CPM’s do mostly home or birth center births. Generally, she can’t do hospital births and have only a few medications they can use, taking only low-risk clients. Then there are “traditional” midwives that are not licensed, have no requirements for schooling, usually trained by apprenticeship only. In some states this is legal and in other states a traditional midwife is illegal.

What are some societal problems in nursing?

Image
Safe staffing is a big political issue among nurses just now. Depending on state laws and the institution in question, some employers can require nurses to work overtime on short notice or to take patient loads that they see as unsafe. I’ve also worked for some employers who subtly encourage nurses to violate labor laws, e.g. to get to work early, take reports on patients, and “get themselves organized” before punching in. Any job with as many variables as nursing is inevitably going to be difficult at times: we all are familiar with having to work late when an emergency derails our routine; we’re all used to being called and asked to pick up more hours; we’re sometimes called on to work shorthanded. The problem arises when short staffing is the norm rather than the exception. There have been many studies on this issue. Although results have been varied, the general consensus is that all other things being equal, a higher nurse-to-patient ratio does result in fewer patient compli...

Nurses also play the role of patient advocate, patient educator, empower patients, and much more. They can help patients make informed decisions regarding their health , including helping them navigate a complex medical system, translating medical terms, and helping patients make ethical decisions.   Nurse advocates support the patient's best interests while respecting the family's important role . They attend healthcare team meetings with the patient and family to clarify any communication problems and ensure information from the healthcare team is complete and correct. Patient education is a significant part of a nurse's job. Education  empowers patients to improve their health status . When patients are involved in their care, they are more likely to engage in interventions that may increase their chances for positive outcomes.
