Can a midwife become a gynecologist

Image
You would need to apply to medical school then to an Ob-gyn residency. I have met a few nurses that have done just that, RN to MD but not from CNM to MD. But if you want to do surgery then that is the way to go. The midwives that were in my practice did a lot of office gyn (Well Woman Care) but had no interest in surgery. If you are already a midwife why would you want to spend 8 more years relearning many of the things you already know?

Stress and disrupted circadian rhythm affect metabolism

Image
The researchers studied mice models in the laboratory wherein they introduced genetic alterations in various parts of the circadian rhythm machinery. They also exposed the mice to social stress, wherein they exposed the male mice to an unknown and dominant male. The male mice had increased stress responses depending on the time they were exposed to the stress. In a series of experiments, the team also found that the stress responses were also dependent on the internal body clock, and body weight and food intake had been negatively affected when stress happens during their inactive phase, which is during the daytime in mouse, and night-time in humans. Therefore, they found that repeated exposure to stress negatively affected metabolism, due to long-lasting effects on stress responses. The experiments shed light on who shift-work, chronic stress, jet lag, and lack of good sleep can lead to metabolic disorders. Today, many people are faced with metabolic diseases, including obesity. Many ...

Certain professions and late dinners bad for women’s heart health

Image
A new study from a team from Dornsife School of Public Health at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has revealed that post-menopausal women in certain professions are more likely to suffer from heart diseases and other heart problems. Many of these jobs include those in health care, says the study. The results of the study are to be presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2019 to be held in Philadelphia between November 16th and 18th. For this study and to draw conclusions, the team had to investigate the heart health of a large number of women. They included over 65,000 postmenopausal women for their analysis and the average age of the study population was 63 years. These women and their data were part of the Women’s Health Initiative study. In the database, the team noted 20 common professions of the women and classified them according to the “ Life’s Simple 7 cardiovascular health metrics ” prescribed by the American Heart Association. Includ...

Nurse launches podcast to dispel fears about psychiatric hospitals

Image
A newly qualified mental health nurse has given patients detained in psychiatric hospitals a platform to share their experiences in a bid to challenge fears and misunderstandings amongst the public. Mr. Waldron told, he felt it was important to ensure the voice of patients was heard because there were still misconceptions that meant the public were “scared of people who are in hospital”. He said he wanted to educate the general public that mental health hospitals did not consist of “straight-jackets” and “white coats” like some people still believed. “Patients have got fantastic stories and a fantastic life history,” said Mr. Waldron, who qualified in March this year and is employed by St Andrew's Healthcare. “And so, I thought this was a way to give them a voice through podcasts.” Mr. Waldron first came up with the idea during his studies and decided to pitch it to his employer. He had worked for St Andrew's Healthcare as a healthcare assistant for more than 10 years before...

Chip Device Heals Injuries In Seconds

Image
Picture this - you suffer a car accident and your leg is broken. Within moments a small chip-like silicone device is placed on the broken leg - it reprograms the skin cells beneath and treats the injury - in a matter of seconds.  Sounds like the stuff of science fiction, right? Nope. This is real-life, folks! A new non-invasive technology - Tissue Nanotransfection (TNT) - has been developed by researchers at Ohio State University to reprogram and grow skin cells directly on the body. The device delivers genes to skin cells by passing a strong electrical current through the chip and transforming the cells.  In lab studies on mice, the tiny device has successfully reprogrammed and grown cells - healing injured parts of the body - from broken bones to brain damage.  This is the first time cells have been reprogrammed on a live body.  The torn arteries in a mouse’s broken leg were healed after touching TNT - it turned the skin cells into vascular cells - healing t...

What is Radial Artery?

Image
All arteries have a pulse, but it's easier to palpate (feel) the pulse or heartbeat at certain locations. it's easier to feel the pulse or heart beat when the artery is near the surface of the skin and when there's firm tissue (such as a bone) beneath the artery. The three commonest sites are the radial (wrist), carotid (throat), and brachial The area that you choose to check the pulse may vary depending upon the condition of the patient. The most commonly used is Radial pulse (wrist area). The radial pulse (the pulse is taken using radial artery) is taken at a point where the radial artery crosses the bones of the wrist. When the patient’s hand is turned so that the palm is facing up, the radial pulse is taken on the thumb side of the top side of the wrist. Q. Which artery is usually palpated to get the pulse? Brachial Radial Axillary Ulnar
